An poem of William Wordsworth from 1802, "My Heart Leaps Up When I Behold The Rainbow", begins:
My heart leaps up when I behold
A rainbow in the sky:
So was it when my life began;
So is it now I am a man;
So be it when I shall grow old,
Or let me die!…

However, the Newtonian deconstruction of the rainbow is said to have provoked John Keats to lament in his poem "Lamia" in 1820:
Do not all charms fly
At the mere touch of cold philosophy?
There was an awful rainbow once in heaven:
We know her woof, her texture; she is given
In the dull catalogue of common things.
Philosophy will clip an Angel's wings,
Conquer all mysteries by rule and line,
Empty the haunted air, and gnomed mine –
Unweave a rainbow
God gave Noah the rainbow sign.
No more water, the fire next time!

Just like the falling rainbow,
Just like the stars in the sky,
Life should never feel small.

As the appearance of the rainbow in the clouds on a rainy day, so was the appearance of the surrounding radiance. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face and heard a voice speaking. Ezekiel 1:28

Lynne, jump over to my blog and check out my last two posts. I've been admiring some amazing photos of rainbows and circumhorizon arcs. I think our heads are in a similar space at the moment.
Hey Lynn! Hope you and Ruebens are doing well! You guys need to come visit at the Gathering again... it was exciting to see you there last time! :-)
Hey Lynne
Maybe you'll drop me a line so we can get together with you guys. Rubens doesn't seem to want to write me! :)
We're going to philly tomorrow, and we'll be there probably thru sunday!
I love the arc raibow, by the way. I once saw a rainbow do that right outside Yosemite nat'l park!

Hey Lynne - thanks for the pictures. It looks like the end of the one rainbow, but there is no pot of gold - only a promise ;)
Tara and I were thinking of coming up for Dan's concert in Lansdale next weekend - what are you and Rubens up to??
jeromy
